Children Harrowing in Britain in 1942

Jean Harwell (left) and Alice Norman lead horses 'Daisy' and 'Captain' as they harrow a field at Ashwell Merchant Taylors School near Baldock in Hertfordshire, 1942. Jean Harwell (left) and Alice Norman lead horses Daisy and Captain in a spot of light harrowing at their school in Ashwell, just north of Baldock in Hertfordshire. Two other children, and the farmer from whom the horses have been borrowed, follow along behind, enjoying the sunshine whilst they keep watch on the harrow. In return for the loan of the horses, the children have agreed to hoe the farmer's beans.
